Summary
Dr. Matthew Morell mentioned that IRRI has built a very good relationship with Cambodia in building capacity and introducing new rice varieties, maintaining seed quality, speeding up rice research activity, especially of new rice varietal release, rice seed production, seed multiplication, varietal promotion. IRRI has good collaborations with other partners in introducing modern varieties, rice-based farming system, and promotion of new varieties to ensure that we meet the needs of the farmers.

He gave his welcome remarks during the planning workshop of the USAID-funded project, "Accelerating the Adoption of Stress-Tolerant Rice Varieties by Smallholder Farmers in Nepal and Cambodia," under the leadership of the International Rice Research Institute. He mentioned that he would like to take this opportunity to express his sincere appreciation to IRRI and USAID for their continuous support of Cambodia's rice sector through:
- enhanced and stabilized rice productivity by promoting, producing and disseminating seeds of high-yielding flood- and drought-tolerant rice varieties in the target zones in Cambodia;
- promotion of good management practices for the new varieties;
- developing an effective and rapid awareness and communication system to deliver timely information about the new varieties;
- strengthening the seed systems to ensure sustainable supply of high-quality seed; and
- conducting training activities on seed production, seed processing, seed storage, seed quality control, and seed business. View video
