If certain environmental warriors were active several decades ago, the so-called miracle rice might never have been developed at the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna. Instead in 1969, the IRRI received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding for seven years of interdisciplinary collaboration among Asian and Western scientists to achieve “radical, rapid advances in rice culture” and consequently easing global hunger. Robert Zeigler of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) described the project as ‘one of the great undertakings in plant sciences of the early 21st century’. Zeigler said, “Unless we can translate our work into meaningful products adopted by rice farmers worldwide, this will remain simply an academic pursuit. The unique partnerships that characterize this program should make sure this happens.” Read more

Dr Mahabub Hossain, one of the best known agricultural and development economists in Bangladesh and South Asia, passed away at a US hospital on Sunday after a battle with heart disease. The eminent economist served as the head of social science division of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), executive director of Brac, and director general of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
